Holiday Snaps

My family and I went to Croatia this summer for our summer holiday and I took my Praktica MTL3, 4 rolls of film, and the sound recording equipment with me. Whilst there I wanted to capture some sounds of the small coastal village of Baška as well as some pictures of what life is like there during peak holiday season - I wanted to get some good family pics too - I didn't know what to expect, I did no research. But, I didn't think I needed to do any. The vibe would present itself, images would and did jump out at me (whether I took good photos at the time or not - you can never quite tell), and ideas of places and things to record presented themselves as we spent time there in Baška.
Whilst capturing images and sound I noticed that with image there is a greater degree of control over the final piece. You can position yourself, alter shot angle, wait for better light, wait for an action of some sort. Whereas with sound it is much more out of your hands. All the details will be there of what is happening in the moment. You can also position the mics etc but sound isn't just one slice. It is many continuous slices and you have no real control of what happens in those slices when you're out field recording.
